Capitol Hill welcomes a new pizza joint. It comes you from the creators of Dos Santos. White Pie is a New England inspired brick oven pizzeria that also offers handmade pasta. I first learned about the venture while dining at Dos Santos. We were sitting on their patio so long, the father of the owners ending up sparking a conversation with us. I knew If the new place was anything like their taco spot, the neighborhood was definitely in for a treat!
Fast forward three months, and I am walking into this beautiful open space. The first thing I noticed was the lovely brick interior. Next, the stunning brick oven. This cooking style will typically yield thinner, perfectly charred crust with lighter layers of ingredients. A good crust can hold all the toppings without becoming soggy in the center. This pie definitely held up on that end of the bargain.
We shared the Porky pie. A Neapolitan style pizza with traditional red sauce, fresh mozzarella, spicy Italian Sopressata with jalapeños. It was topped on with a hot honey! All the flavors melted together with ease. The hot honey was a very nice touch. It added a dimension of sweetness to the dish.
We also ordered the ravioli. It was tossed in a light butter sauce with mushrooms, fresh basil, and lightly grated cheese. This pasta was a bit underwhelming. Nothing about this dish stood out. Maybe a pinch more salt would have helped to pronounce each component. The Green Salad was our vegetable of choice. It was very basic. The greens were extremely fresh, topped off with a balsamic dressing.
My first impression of White Pie is that it is a solid find for the neighborhood. The community style seating is very inviting and is a great social set up. You can expect high-quality ingredients in a more minimalistic cooking approach. The price point is reasonable. The portions are a bit on the smaller side. If there is more than one person, I would definitely recommend pasta, pizza and possibly an appetizer. I looking forward to a return visit. There were definitely a few more pies and pastas I’d like to try!
