Over the past three years, I’ve been told about the great drinks that Bar Red was serving up. It’s a favorite for government employees working in the downtown area. But I hadn’t heard much about the bar’s food offerings. After looking over the menu online, I stopped in for a visit.
It was a pleasant surprise to find out the many kinds of pasta featured were prepared in house. This definitely made it difficult to narrow down what to order. Everything sounded tasty. We started with the artichoke dip as we looked over the rest of the menu. This dish was packed with flavor. You really can’t go wrong with this classic. But Bar Red stepped it up a notch with its presentation and great bread selection.
Generally, I highlight one or two standout items from each meal. In this case, it is pretty impossible to do so. We enjoyed each dish. We all had personal favorites but agreed that each item was on point. The Chef’s Goat Cheese Ravioli came out first. It was a light and straightforward dish. It was cooked in a traditional tomato based sauce garnished with fresh cheese and herbs. The Shrimp Diablo was the most flavorful of the three main dishes. It packed a spicy punch.
The Seared Salmon was my top pick for the evening. Seared salmon with shaved asparagus, lemon buerre blanc sauce, and mushroom risotto. The salmon was cooked to perfection. The risotto was nice and tender. The sauce rounded out the flavor profile by adding acidity. Wow! I was tempted to get two of these. But I figured since I live less than a mile away I could always come back for more!
Our bartender was amazing. She was knowledgeable, personable and attentive. It gave a warm vibe to the space. The chef was equally as amazing and engaging. He was helpful in suggesting menu options. Major shout out to Zach, who is the owner of Bar Red. He chatted with us at the end and gave some great background information on the bar. That’s probably the most enjoyable part of my restaurant visits, interacting with management and staff. Bar Red is a special gem downtown. It's tucked away from the central area. I highly recommend their food and drinks! Looking forward to stopping in soon for that seared salmon and maybe try something new.
