Lola Coastal Mexican

I have been guilty of not spending enough time exploring the LoHi food scene. With so many options, it can be hard to choose. For me, there has always been one standout star, Lola Coastal Mexican. Stumbling upon decent seafood in Denver is a struggle. Let alone finding a menu with some ethnic flare. Lola's offers a fresh take on traditional Mexican dishes with a coastal influence. Let’s dive deeper into the menu!

 

The beginning, middle, and end of our meal was all about the tequila!!! I could not pass up an opportunity to taste some of the finely crafted beverages being served up here. I started with a Mircale Coin Margarita made with Milagro Reposado, Patrón citrónge, and lime. We were also served some delicious frozen margaritas later in the meal. This is absolutely starting off on the right note!

 

No trip to Lola Coastal Mexican is complete without an order of tableside guacamole. They have an entire set-up so that you can order it just the way you like it. We opted for mild with a little extra lime juice. The scribed “Lola” around the bowl is the perfect final touch to this starter. Next up was the Shrimp Ceviche, cucumber, avocado, smoked serrano aioli, aguachile Verde and chia seeds. Such a lovely display! It tasted even better than it looked. Last on our starter list was the Caesar Salad. We figured we needed something a bit more healthy to round out round one.

 

The second round of drinks started to kick in right as we received our main courses. I think I was filled up with all that fiber from the salad because I wasn’t able to eat many of the tacos I ordered. Or it could be that I ordered one too many tacos and had too much tequila. The world will never know! 

 

Tacos:
- Cochinita Pibil: achiote-citrus roasted pork, burnt pineapple
- Crispy Fish: smoked serrano aioli and kimchito available fried or grilled
- Carne Asada: chile-rubbed flatiron steak, pickled red onion, cilantro, cheese
- Roasted Poblano: poblano "rajas", grilled asparagus, fig macha salsa, pepitas
- Chile-Braised Chicken: creamy cabbage slaw, cheese

 

The most stunning of all the dishes was the Whole Fish. You have a red snapper "Zarandeado" style, chipotle chimichurri, ranch beans and cucumber escabeche. It is literally the entire fish!

The snapper was moist and well seasoned. Definitely had to slow down and remind myself not to choke on the bones. Our third, and final, entree was the daily special, smoked BBQ ribs, with grilled corn and watermelon. This dish was a great balance of sweet without being overpowering. Each item complemented each other. The colors made the plate pop! The meat was smoked perfectly. The sauce added another layer of flavor. This was one outstanding item! I would absolutely recommend this if you have a chance to dine during the time it is available. 

 

Lola Coastal Mexican has been one of my favorite dining experiences over the past couple months. The food speaks for itself. I can’t say enough about it. On top of that, the service is second to none. Our server went above and beyond to make sure our table was taken care of, from start to finish. Everyone from our server assistant, tableside guacamole attendant and management was warm and friendly. 

 

The dining room has a dimly lit, a lounge type ambiance that lends itself nicely to a cocktail or two. The bar area is a little more lively and engaging. When the weather permits, the windows are open in the patio area. Their happy hour menu is definitely worth the value.
