Thrice Korean BarbieQ PopUp

August 27, 2018

“Korean BarbieQ is the pop up restaurant that you’ve never seen, felt, or tasted before. Imagine badass Korean food paired with blow-your mind cocktails in a deconstructed barbie-art installation. It’s slightly nostalgic and a bit weird, but mostly it’s a full sensory experience designed to flip expectation on its head.Thrice is a rotating pop up eatery that brings immersive design, unexpected fare and weirdo cocktails together to wake your brain.” - Thrice

This past Thursday, I had to privilege of attending the second installment of Korean BarbieQ presented by Thrice, OZ Architecture, Two Parts and Feed Media. Proceeds of the curated event were donated to Project Angel Heart. Thursday night’s menu was crafted by the folks at Injoi Korean Kitchen located within Zeppelin Station. Cocktails concocted by the brain of Shawn Campbell of El Five.

The menu included:

  • Bulgogi Burgers

  • Pork Belly w/ Ssam Lettuce Wraps + House Kimchi

  • Korean BBQ Brisket w/ Korean Slaw, Pancake

  • Korean Grilled "Barbie" Legs* - Gogujang Grilled Frog Legs w/ Pickled Radish

Cocktails

  • The Miranda: Vodka + Lemon Juice + Peach Cordial + Rhubarb Bitters + Champagne

  • Malibu Ken: Bourbon + Pear Brandy + Lemon Juice + Simple Syrup + Soda Water

  • Tropical Dream House: Guatemalan Rum + Pineapple Juice + Lime Juice + Vanilla Syrup + Cinnamon Syrup

  • BarbieQ Special: Vodka + Rosé + Grapefruit Juice severed frozen

As if the food wasn’t enough, DJ CYN was on the 1’s and 2’s. The playlist featured dance music from the 80’s throughout the 00’s. Each night featured music performances from local artist such as Zani B. This is the dining moment I’ve been waiting for in Denver. With so many new restaurant openings, emerging number of pr and marketing brands geared towards hospitality, very few are creating an engaging experience around dining. There is an amazing opportunity to interact with an influential following. Abigail Plonkey, and her team, have hit the nail on the head. Thrice is planning to host a monthly installment of these popups. Check out their website to stay up to date on upcoming events.
